A Note about the music
Samaa’i is a well-known form of Oriental instrumental music. It
consists of four khaanas, or parts, and a tasliim. There are ten beats
in every bar and the beat of the fourth khaana is usually different.
The first piece, samaa’i “’Ajam ‘Ushayraan,” follows this structure with
a slight difference in tempo. In the first khaana, we recognize a change
in tempo at the beginning when the other instruments start playing. As
the samaa’i goes back to the traditional pace, we hear a reduction in
tempo by the third khaana. This rupture of classical form was imposed
because of the general ambience of the samaa’i and the myriad of
feelings it creates.
The second piece, samaa’i “Nahwand,” by Issa Boulos, contains another
rupture of the classical form. It consists of five khaanas and a tasliim.
An additional khaana was added because of the general feeling the
samaa’i creates and the way it was formed in the artist’s mind. Boulos
felt in this samaa’i that the classical number of khaanas is
insufficient to transfer the totality and complexity of his sensations.
ABOUT THE MUSIC
Instrumental music is a system of
signs parallel to other systems of sound, much like language itself. In
the musical language presented on CD, I tried to create an ambience of
intertextuality, a layering of memory and self as it was shaped by the
experiences of life.
The American critic, Peter Allen Wilson, once said, “There is music for
the heart and music for the mind. The music for the mind is the height
of this dichotomy.” Perhaps what he meant is that the music of the mind
is a mixture, or a balance, between the heart and mind; This is what I
wanted my work to be.
Just as human actions are defined by motion and stillness, by speech and
silence, music is expressed in similar dichotomies. Silence, in the new
musical theory, is not a pause in communication, but an eloquent form of
it that bashfully, yet respectfully, lures the listener’s mind to
imagine, to wander freely. Triggering the imagination is a necessary
ingredient of creativity in any artwork. I sincerely hope that my work
will be judged according to this criterion, above all others.
I invite you to imagine with me.
